Ocean ENT addresses relentless ragweed allergies

Ocean Otolaryngology Associates addresses ragweed allergies.

WALL TOWNSHIP/TOMS RIVER, NJ – Is ragweed season ever going to end? Ocean ENT weighs in on what seems like everlasting allergies. “Ragweed typically peaks in mid-September and ends with the winter’s first frost; however, this is not the case in 2021,” said Dr. Bruce W. Peters of Ocean ENT. “Symptoms from ragweed allergies are lasting longer than ever before, in fact many researchers believe that climate change may be extending the season.”

Ragweed is a member of the daisy family and has tiny yellow-green flowers that produce about a million grains of pollen per plant daily. “The heavy pollinator is throughout the United States, but it is the biggest problem on the East coast,” said Dr. Peters.

Ragweed pollen grains are so light that they can travel up to 400 miles in the wind, according to Ocean ENT. “Our patients who come in with ragweed allergies are experiencing allergy symptoms like a stuffy or runny nose, sinus pressure, sneezing and itchy eyes,” Dr. Peters said.

To help keep ragweed allergies in check, Dr. Peters offers the following tips:

  • Where hats, gloves, glasses and coats outside to prevent contact with ragweed and other allergens.
  • Ensure your air conditioning and vacuum cleaners are running with a HEPA filter to reduce allergens.
  • Use a dehumidifier whenever possible.
  • Stay indoors on dry, windy days.
  • If you do spend extended time outdoors, take a shower to remove allergens from your skin and hair.
  • If you have spent an extended period outside, remove clothes and shower to rinse allergens away.
  • Check pollen counts at pollen.com and close windows at night whenever counts are high. Note: Pollen counts are often the highest in the mornings.

Allergies may resolve over a short period and the administration of the proper over the counter antihistamines may alleviate the symptoms. However, if you or your child suffer from ragweed allergies, Ocean ENT encourages you to be seen by a specialist who will assist in preventing other ear, nose and throat problems from occurring.
