Sleep Apnea

A good night’s sleep is essential to your physical and mental health. For both children and adults, it is important to be well-rested in order for your body to function properly. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that affects thousands of people every year. Sleep apnea occurs when breathing is disrupted during sleep. Snoring, insomnia, daytime drowsiness, breathing difficulty and heart trouble are some of the noticeable signs of sleep apnea. Since many of these symptoms are common and can go unnoticed, it’s important to take precautions and see a doctor if you are experiencing them.

Causes of sleep apnea vary. Physical symptoms of sleep apnea include enlarged tonsils and adenoids, as well as abnormalities of the jawbone and tongue, resulting in airway blockage and snoring. Weight is also a factor in causing sleep apnea. Many cases of sleep apnea are easily treatable. An adenotonsillectomy is routinely performed when a child or an adult experiences enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Lifestyle changes may be necessary to combat sleep apnea, such as exercise, weight loss and use of a breathing assistance device at night.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with an Ocean ENT physician as soon as possible. Our Ocean ENT physicians will help diagnose and treat your sleep disorder. The Ocean ENT office is expanding its office hours to accommodate a larger patient volume. To schedule an appointment, please call 732-281-0100. For the most up-to-date information, please follow Ocean ENT on Facebook.
