TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)

Do you have jaw pain and discomfort? Difficulty chewing? Clicking and locking of the jaw? These are a few indications that you may be suffering from TMJ. TMJ is a joint dysfunction in the jaw that 15% of Americans suffer from. The joints in your jaw muscle make it possible for you to open and close your mouth. If they are functioning improperly, it can result in pain and discomfort.

Possible causes of TMJ include:

  • Arthritis
  • Dislocation
  • Injury
  • Tooth and jaw alignment
  • Stress and teeth grinding

If you’re suffering from any of these pre-existing conditions, the risk of developing TMJ is higher.

Less noticeable signs of TMJ include ear pain, headaches and aches/tenderness around the jaw. It’s important to notice if these symptoms are constant or reoccurring and see a doctor right away. Following a diagnosis, a doctor will inform you on the best steps to take for your particular situation.

Some easy at-home remedies that can lessen pain and discomfort include:

  • Avoid nail biting and chewing gum
  • Eat softer foods
  • Use heat packs to modify pain
  • Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation to relax and control jaw tension

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with an Ocean ENT physician as soon as possible. Our Ocean ENT physicians will help diagnose and treat your jaw discomfort. The Ocean ENT office is expanding its office hours to accommodate a larger patient volume. To schedule an appointment, please call 732-281-0100. For the most up-to-date information, please follow Ocean ENT on Facebook.
